Mary Catherine Pierce
Mary Catherine Pierce was born on October 28, 1943 in Pee Wee Valley, KY. She grew up in Middletown, KY and graduated from EKU, where she met her husband, in Fall 1964. She taught mathematics at Bellevue, KY in the Spring of 1965, as well as mathematics and physics at Madison Central High School from Fall 1965 to Fall 1974. She also taught part time in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at EKU from 1983 to 2005.

Sarah Hanvey Martin
Sarah "Sally" Hanvey Martin received her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and her Master’s of Arts in Education (both in English Education) from the University of Georgia. In addition, she received her Doctorate of Philosophy from Louisiana State University. Sally taught high school English in Georgia for four years. She additionally taught at the university level for thirty years, retiring from Eastern Kentucky University in January, 2017, having been awarded Professor Emeritus status.

Samira Kassees Tuel
Samira Kassees Tuel was born on February 11, 1935 in Jerusalem, Palestine, to Dr. Saadallah Kassees and Asma Musallem Kassees. She was the wife of E. Duane Tuel for 58 years until he preceded her in death in April of 2022.
Samira worked as a Librarian at Eastern Kentucky University for 36 years. She loved her job at the University and made many lifelong friends. After living in a few other cities, Samira settled in Winston Salem, NC, where she met Duane. They married on November 13, 1965, moved back to Kentucky, Duane’s home, and settled in Richmond.
Dot Kirkpatrick
Dorothy Louise Kirkpatrick “Dot” completed her masters at the University of Tennessee and her doctor’s level degree at the University of Kentucky. She found her professional home at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) teaching and coaching for almost 40 years. Throughout her life Dot followed EKU sports and actively supported all teams.
Dale A. Lawrenz
After high school, Dale enlisted with the U.S. Navy and was stationed on the USS Dahlgren from 1961-1964. Dale went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and his Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Dale retired as the Human Resources Director with Eastern Kentucky University in December 2000. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling internationally with his devoted wife. Though his favorite pastime was watching his four grandchildren in their many and varied sporting events and activities.
W. A. (Al) Morris
A native of Cheatham County, Tennessee, Mr. Morris served in the U.S. Navy as Seaman First Class-Quartermaster from 1945 to 1946. He received an undergraduate degree at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas; received his Masters Degree from Long Beach State College in Long Beach, CA; and EdD from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, TN.
Dr. Dean Acker
He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1958 and he taught in high schools in Fort Smith, Arkansas and Bradford County, Florida before coming to EKU in 1963. He was a popular professor and administrator at EKU for 37 years before retiring in 2000.
Dr. Acker served as president of the Richmond Rotary Club, president of the Richmond Little League, president of the Kentucky Higher Education Association and was a former Deacon in the First Presbyterian Church.
Daniel Arthur Lichty
Dan’s lifelong experience with aquatics started when he was growing up in southern California. He even participated in the 1956 Olympic Diving Trials. He married his wife, Barbara, in 1960 and returned to California to complete his B.A. and M.A. in Physical Education at California State University.
They settled in Kentucky in 1969. He joined EKU as a coach with the swimming and diving teams. In his time as a coach at EKU, Dan saw immense success, winning several championships. He coached until the programs were discontinued after the 1986-1987 season. He was also an Assistant Professor, where he taught physical education, life saving, and water safety classes during his 33-year tenure. He also used his love of aquatics to give back to his community through education and community building.
Robert J. Baugh
Robert J. Baugh's teaching career began at the high school level in St. Louis, and then at the college level at Austin Peay University before joining Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) faculty in 1970. He served as chair of health education department before becoming acting dean of the college of health, physical education, recreation and athletics in 1987. He was selected as dean in 1989. He also simultaneously served as the university's director of athletics.
During his tenure at EKU, he received the highest award of his discipline, the Mustand Award, was editor of his professional journal and actively served in the National and Kentucky Associations of Health, Physical Education and Dance. He served as the association president, and served on the NCAA Council and Eligibility Committee.
Lillie Mary Marcum Hutchens
Lillie Mary Marcum Hutchins was born September 27, 1944, in Madison County, KY to the late Ealdon and Nettie Alexander Marcum. Mary was a Custodial Supervisor at Eastern Kentucky University. She loved cooking, playing bingo, watching game shows on tv, playing scrabble, but most of all spending time with her family.
James Douglas Burnham
Doug was a Professor of Anthropology, Sociology and Social Work at Eastern Kentucky University; receiving many accolades over the years including the Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Arts and Sciences, being the last representative of the college to receive this award. He also was the coordinator of Kincare Training at the University of Kentucky after his retirement from EKU.
Doug was admired for his creativity and initiative that brought the Public Child Welfare Certification Program to Kentucky. All who had the pleasure to know him and/or work with him were captured by his kindness and sincere interest and passion for all students. Among his other accomplishments, he took great pride in being named an official Kentucky Colonel by Gov. Julian Carroll in 1979.
Dr. Karen Lynn Dilka
Karen was born in Greeley, Colorado, on May 21, 1952. In the late 1980’s, she relocated to Richmond where she went to work at Eastern Kentucky University where she was the heart and soul of the Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program, both graduate and undergraduate, until her retirement in 2013. Dr. Dilka was well known in the Deaf Education professional community where she served as President of the Association of College Educators of Deaf and Hard of Hearing, an international association, and served as Executive Director of the Council on the Education of the Deaf, the accreditation body for standards for teacher certification in that field of education.
Richard Howard Bromley
A professor of music at Eastern Kentucky University for 30 years, Richard loved interacting with his students. He enjoyed aiding and encouraging students to succeed as much as possible in music and music-related activities. Richard was also a jazz improviser and loved sharing and playing jazz with his students and fellow musicians.
Kerstin Pedersen Warner
During her four decades as a Professor of English Literature at Eastern Kentucky University, she published books on Thomas Otway and John Jacob Niles, wrote the libretto for an original opera, and inspired thousands of young writers to find their voice.
Ralph Judson Thompson
Ralph joined the faculty at Eastern Kentucky University in 1965 and became the first faculty sponsor for Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. His dedication and love for his fraternity spanned over 50 years and he cherished and mentored his brothers throughout the rest of his life. On his 91st birthday, surrounded by his Phi Delta Theta brothers, he is quoted as saying to them, “God put a lot of years in my life, but the Phi Delts have put a lot of life in my years.”
Benjamin Joseph Bayer
Ben attended Eastern Kentucky University, graduating in 1977 after 3 years with a degree in Business Administration. He began working as a cashier in Billings and Collections at EKU and went on to become the Assistant Director and eventually the Director of Billings and Collections. He retired in 2002 after serving EKU for 26 years. Ben was an Associate Member of the Madison County Democratic Women’s Club, member of the Exchange Club and American Legion and a supporter of the EKU Colonel Club during his lifetime. He will be remembered as a smart and witty gentleman who enjoyed bowling, trivia, cards and following his favorite sports teams.
Guy Rowland Strong
Guy Rowland Strong, 93, retired Educator, Coach, husband of the late Aleen Noland, wife for 64 ½ years, died Sunday, May 19, 2024, at the VA hospital in Lexington Kentucky.Strong transferred to EKU in 1951-52, enlisted in the Army and received his commission in field artillery and went on active duty in the Korean War from 1952-54. Upon discharge he returned to EKU for the 1954-55 season, playing for Paul McBrayer and his team won the 1955 Conference Championship. He lettered in basketball and baseball at EKU graduating in 1955.
Libby A. Black
Elizabeth “Libby” Ann Black, 74, of Richmond, KY, formerly of Maryville, TN, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024. Born in Knoxville, TN on May 3, 1949, Libby was the daughter of Everett D. and Betty Jo Timmons, both of whom preceded her in death. She was a devoted wife, mother, mother in-law, sister, and above all else a grandmother. Everyone that knew Libby, knew that she was a force to be reckoned with when it came to her children, or grandchildren.
Dr. Jon Laurence Hayes
Dr. Jon Laurence Hayes, age 72, of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away on April 14, 2024 at UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
Laurence began his professional career as an instructor at Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona in 1978, where he taught American Sign Language. He then served as Program Coordinator & Counselor for the Office of Special Services at the University of Arizona, and as Chair of the Interpreter Training Program at Pima Community College. In 1989, Laurence accepted a position as Program Director of the Interpreter Training Program at Eastern Kentucky University, where he was tasked with developing and promoting the ASL and Interpreter Education Program. Over the course of his thirty-year career at EKU, Laurence served as Associate Dean of the College of Education from 2015-2018, and as 504/ADA Coordinator and Chair of the Interpreter Training Program until his retirement in 2019.
Laurence was an unwavering advocate for the Deaf community, having served as an interpreter for more than four decades. He was certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. and by the Kentucky Board of Interpreters for the Deaf.
Peter Robert Kensicki
Peter Kensicki, 79, passed away Sunday, December 24th, 2023. He served as a local advisor at EKU and on the National Advisory board for many years.
His first teaching job was at Ohio University where he taught Finance. He moved on to the Cincinnati Insurance Company where he was in charge of education and training for insurance professionals. The Insurance Institute of America was his next challenge, creating and editing insurance training programs. He began his return to the classroom when he joined Eastern Kentucky University in 1989 and taught Insurance and Finance in the College of Business. There he excelled. His students were his priority, not only his responsibility to educate, but to inspire them to reach goals they never thought they could achieve. With his unique brand of teaching and humor, he hoped to reach all students no matter their challenges. Another achievement was securing one of EKU’s first multimillion dollar endowed chairs, The Robert B. Morgan Chair of Insurance.
Michael "Sean" June
Michael Sean June passed away in Baptist Health Lexington on Friday, December 22, 2023. He was born in Westfield, NY to Michael S. and Jennifer A. Calarco June on June 19, 1966. Sean received a BS in Biology from State University of NY Fredonia and a BS/MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology. After spending several years in industry with IBM as an advisory thermal engineer, he earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina State University and began a new career in academia at Western Carolina University. Sean later joined the faculty of Christian Brothers University in Memphis as an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering before joining the faculty of Eastern Kentucky University in 2022. Dr. June served as Professor, Interim Chair of the School of Engineering, Aviation, Construction and Technology as well as Director of Manufacturing Engineering at EKU.
A scholarship in Manufacturing Engineering at EKU is being established in memory of Dr. June. The mailing address: Eastern Kentucky University Development Office, 521 Lancaster Avenue, Richmond, KY 40475.
Carolin Walz
Carolin Walz passed away on October 30th, 2023 at the age of 62. Born and raised in Germany, she earned degrees in English, French and Journalism in Münster, Germany. She immigrated to America in 1988, attracted to central Kentucky in particular because of her great love of horses. Once in Lexington, she pursued a PhD in English at the University of Kentucky.
Carolin started teaching part-time at EKU in 2007 in the Department of English; two years later the department hired her as a full-time Lecturer.
Carolin was committed to the larger University community. She won a campus-wide teaching award and served two separate terms on Faculty Senate.
Allan Richardson
Allan Scott Richardson, aged 71, passed away unexpectedly at his home on October 26, 2023. He dedicated his professional life to Eastern Kentucky University, where he managed the bowling alley until his retirement. Born in Irvine, Kentucky, Allan was the son of the late Wayne and Eda Webb Richardson.
Dr. Larry Sexton
Larry Charles Sexton, Ed.D., a dedicated educator and veteran, passed away on September 9, 2023, in Seattle, WA, at the age of 79, after a courageous yearlong battle with Leukemia. He was born on December 13, 1943, in Muncie, Indiana, spending his early years on various Air Force bases.
In 1976, Larry began his career as an assistant professor at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, Kentucky. He became deeply involved with the Kentucky Counseling Association, even serving as its President. Larry’s dedication extended to the Kentucky Counseling Licensure board, where he contributed his expertise for several years. Over the years, he rose to the position of full professor at EKU and served as Associate Dean of the College of Education, even acting as Dean for a year. Following his retirement from EKU, he continued to share his knowledge, teaching at Northern Kentucky University and the University of the Cumberlands, specializing in online counseling courses, until his final retirement in August 2021.
Frank O'Connor
James Francis “Frank” O’Connor, 81, retired professor of Economics at Eastern Kentucky University, passed away on September 13, 2023, at Baptist Health – Lexington after a brief illness. He was born on October 8, 1941, in Killarney, Ireland. He moved to the United States for graduate school, where he earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota and met Pat Andrews. He and Pat married in 1968 and immersed themselves in several different communities as Frank taught at Virginia Tech, Penn State, the University of Iowa, the University of Florida and Western Carolina University. In 1989, the family moved to Richmond, where Frank taught economics at Eastern Kentucky University until his retirement in 2018.
Coach Roy Kidd
College football has lost one of its all-time legends, and Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) one of its most beloved and accomplished sons.
Roy Kidd passed away in Richmond, Kentucky on September 12th, 2023. He was 91 years old. Kidd was the EKU football coach from 1964 to 2002, where he led his alma mater to two national I-AA championships and two runner-up finishes, 16 Ohio Valley Conference titles and 315 wins, earning induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. Coach Kidd was born in Corbin, Kentucky on December 4, 1931, he was the youngest of seven and the third son of Edd and Pearl Bradford Kidd.
Robert deLanglade
Ron deLanglade passed away April 29, 2023 after several years of declining health. He was born May 20, 1936, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was a true botanist at heart. He spent 2 years as an instructor at Wabash College while completing his PhD. He then joined the faculty at Eastern Kentucky University.
Cheryl Ann Jackson
Cheryl Ann Jackson, 76, died on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at her home in Richmond, Kentucky. She was born on March 3, 1947, in Lowry City, Missouri to the late Woodrow and Orpha Shoemaker Bray. Cheryl was an Educator and Professor of Music Education at Eastern Kentucky University.
Peggy Ochs
Peggy Jo Higdon Ochs, 73, passed away on May 9, 2023. She was born on May 13, 1949 in Saint Joseph, Missouri, to Delmas Higdon Jr. and Winifred Burton Higdon, both of whom preceded her in death. Peggy retired from Eastern Kentucky University after nearly 23 years of working in the Bookstore Administration where she was a loyal and dedicated employee.
Austin Newsom
Austin Ryan Christopher Newsom, age 29, passed away April 21, 2023, at his residence in Berea, KY. He was born June 24, 1993, in Martin, KY to Ricky D. and Brenda B. Newsom. Austin was a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University Aviation. Included with his Pilot Certification he was a Certified Flight Instructor, Certified Flight Instructor-Instrument, Certified Flight Instructor Multi-Engine, Single Engine, and Multi-Engine Land Commercial/Instrument Pilot. Austin also received the Booth Scholar Award and Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Award.
Kenneth Ted Clawson
Dr. Kenneth Ted Clawson, 85, husband of Bobbie Eileen Henley Clawson, died on Friday, April 21, 2023 in Richmond, Kentucky. Ken served as a Professor and Dean for many educational institutions: University of Georgia, Tipton Campus, Tipton Georgia Lake City Jr. College, Lake City, Florida, Florida State Jr. College, Jacksonville, Florida and Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond, Kentucky.
Carolyn Shearer Wells
Dr. Carolyn Shearer Wells, age 81, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2023 at Telford Terrace Nursing Home in Richmond, Kentucky. Dr. Wells received her Rank I in Educational Administration from Eastern Kentucky University. Dr. Wells was also an adjunct instructor of graduate level courses at Eastern Kentucky University.
Kenneth D. Griffith
Kenneth D. Griffith, age 83, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday, March 23, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. He attended Knapp Hall, Berea Foundation School, earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Eastern Kentucky University, and his MBA from the University of Kentucky. In 1965 he joined the faculty of Eastern Kentucky University as a professor of Accounting. During his 32 years of service, he encouraged and mentored countless students both in the classroom and as the faculty advisor to the Accounting Club.
Donald Ray Feltner
Don Feltner, 89, of Richmond, KY, passed away on March 1, 2023 after a ruptured brain aneurysm. His 42 year career at Eastern Kentucky University included positions as Director of Publicity and Publications, Vice President of Public Affairs, Vice President of University Relations & Development. He was the Founding Director of the EKU Foundation, established in 1963. He designed and managed EKU capital campaigns which achieved over $50 million during his career for campus buildings and improvements which included the Chapel of Meditation, Donald Disney Building, Tom & Hazel Little Building, Moberly Building, and the Ashland Fire and Safety Technology Building. He was also instrumental in the acquisition of the Arlington estate, and began major giving programs including the Colonel Club and the baseball team’s Diamond Boosters. He also served as the adviser to both the Progress school newspaper and the Milestone year book which were rated among the nation’s best by collegiate press associations.
Kenneth William Shouse
Kenneth William Shouse, age 69, of Berea, went to be with the Lord on February 7, 2023, at Brodhead Rehabilitation Facility, after a short illness with cancer. Ken loved to watch the Kentucky Wildcats. He was of the Baptist faith, since June 1993, when he was saved. He was retired from EKU and was a veteran of the National Guard, where he served for six years.
Diana Renfro Daniel
Ms. Diana Sue Renfro Daniel, age 66, of Richmond, passed away Monday, February 20, 2023 at UK Chandler Medical Center. Ms. Daniel, the daughter of Charles and Sue Tribble Renfro, was born in Madison County on February 23, 1956. She had worked for Dresser Industries and went on to retire from Eastern Kentucky University.
Danny Roy Robinette
Dr. Danny Roy Robinette, 79, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2023 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. Danny was passionate about education. He spent his career as a professor of Communications/ Speech at Eastern Kentucky University, where he also directed student’s theatrical productions. He was instrumental in recruiting international students for EKU, and was so well- respected by them that he was asked to come teach in Korea for a few years, a job he thoroughly enjoyed. Dr. Robinette made many wonderful friendships both internationally and at EKU that continued until his passing.
Carolyn Moss Lee
Carolyn Moss Lee, age 79, of Ruby Lane in Irvine, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2023, at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond following a long illness. She was a former Administrative Assistant for the EKU Religion and Philosophy Department and attended the Mt. Carmel Christian Church.
John Long Meisenheimer
Dr. John Long Meisenheimer, Sr. died peacefully in his home in Orlando at 89 from transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy.He taught organic chemistry at Eastern Kentucky University for 36 years, where he was honored as a foundation professor in 1994. Dr. Meisenheimer received several EKU teaching awards and was also the author of 14 scientific publications. He retired from EKU in 1999. He was named an iconic professor at EKU in 2020, and the organic chemistry lab at EKU was named in his honor.
Linda Heath Everman
Linda Heath Everman, 81, wife of Dr. Hank Everman, died on Saturday, December 31, 2022, at Baptist Health - Richmond. Although she taught voice privately and as an adjunct in the EKU music department, her emphasis turned to choral directing and she led church choirs in Louisville, Frankfort, Lexington, and Richmond.
Donna Ruth Williams
Donna Ruth Williams, 76, of Burlington New Jersey, passed away on November 20, 2022, from a prolonged illness. Williams taught broadcasting in EKU’s Department of Mass Communications as a full-time faculty member for many years.

Mary Louise Willis, 72, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2022 at The Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation in Berea. She had worked for EKU as a cook, and was of the Baptist faith.
Sue Harris Long
Sue Ann Harris Long, 87, passed away early Wednesday morning, October 12, 2022 at Baptist Health- Richmond. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Clyde B. Long.
Roy Clark Kepferle
Roy Clark Kepferle, born December 28, 1926, in Greeley, CO, to Dorothy Gladys (Ayers) Kepferle and Joseph Royal Kepferle, died on October 9, 2022, in Port Tobacco, MD, at the age of 95. The cause of death was end-stage renal failure.

Dr. Emogene Moore Hogg-Hartman, 91, of Berea passed away peacefully Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center in Richmond. She was born February 2, 1931 in Hunter KY, daughter of the late Ellis and Josie Lykins Moore.

Virginia Nill Jinks received her master of arts in education at EKU in 1965. She proceeded as professor of dance for 28 years, teaching classes on both the bachelor's and master's levels, before retiring in 1989.
