Robert J. Baugh
Robert J. Baugh, age 85, formerly of Richmond, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at his home in Port Charlotte, Florida, on September 19, 2024. He was surrounded by his loving wife, Carol, close friends Manny Sanchez and Barbara Plante, and beloved pets.
Robert was born May 30, 1939 in Gosport, Indiana, to his parents Horace and Eunice Baugh. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. He attended Bloomington High School, where he excelled in both academics and sports. He then attended Indiana University where he recieved his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree in health science.
His teaching career began at the high school level in St. Louis, and then at the college level at Austin Peay University before joining Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) faculty in 1970. He served as chair of health education department before becoming acting dean of the college of health, physical education, recreation and athletics in 1987. He was selected as dean in 1989. He also simultaneously served as the university's director of athletics.
During his tenure at EKU, he received the highest award of his discipline, the Mustand Award, was editor of his professional journal and actively served in the National and Kentucky Associations of Health, Physical Education and Dance. He served as the association president, and served on the NCAA Council and Eligibility Committee.
Upon his retirement in 2001, Robert pursued his other interests; traveling in their motor home, and traveling internationally with friends. He was also a talented woodworker, making furniture, rocking horses and fine wooden vases.
Robert is survived by Carol, his wife of 50 years, his children, Jeffrey, Brian and Carol, and four grandchildren.
