Dr. Barbara Alice (Houk) Singleton

Barbara Alice (Houk) Singleton, 72, died June 13, 2020 with her family by her side in Ormond Beach, Fla.

Dr. Singleton was born Aug. 28, 1947, in Winchester, Indiana to Charles and Anna Virginia (Almonrode) Houk. She married Timothy Joseph Singleton on June 13, 1970.

She graduated from Decatur High School in 1965 and studied Elementary Education at Ball State University, graduating in 1969.

Barbara continued her education, earning her Master's of Elementary Education from Indiana/Purdue University Fort Wayne in 1972 and her doctorate from Ball State University in 1985. Throughout her life, she worked in the field of education in many different areas, including teaching elementary school; as Director of Early Childhood centers in Albuquerque, N.M. and Berea; teaching college classes at Dubuque University and Eastern Kentucky University; and most recently retiring from being an Early Childhood Education Consultant for the Kentucky State Department of Education.

Barbara was an active member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed playing in handbell choirs at whichever church she was a member and directed the handbell choir of First United Methodist Church in Richmond for many years. She was also a board member of the Handbell Musicians of America Area 5.

Barbara's many interests included cross-stitching, reading, music and spending time with her grandchildren.

Barbara is survived by her husband of 50 years, Timothy; sister Char (Steven) Meyer; daughter Kristin Lythgoe; daughter Amy (Kent) Bowden; son Michael (Jill) Singleton; and nine grandchildren.
