Dr. Carolyn Hester Harvey

Dr. Carolyn Hester Harvey, CIH, CHMM, RS, DAAS, was born in Harriman, Tennessee on March 3, 1945. She joined the angels on Oct. 3, 2020 at her best friend’s house, her loving sister Myrna’s Hester Uresti.
A pioneer and leader, Dr. Harvey’s career in environmental health, industrial hygiene and public health endured over 50 years. Dr. Harvey had over 30 years of professional experience working in the field before moving into academia where she shared her rich knowledge.
Dr. Harvey’s 17 years of service to Eastern Kentucky University included roles as chair of the Department of Environmental Health Science & Medical Laboratory Science, director of the Masters of Public Health Program and beloved professor of Environmental Health. Prior to coming to EKU she was an assistant professor of Environmental Health at East Tennessee State University.
She was the 2020 National Environmental Health Association’s (NEHA) prestigious Walter S. Mangold Award recipient and served as the president of National Environmental Health Association from 2014 to 2015. In addition, she was a founding member of the Association of Environmental Health Academic Professionals and the National Council on Diversity in Environmental Health.
Dr. Harvey is loved by her family, friends and former students. Her remarkable legacy will live on in her students through her positive influence in the development of young emerging professionals.
Dr. Harvey was preceded in death by her parents, brother Charles Lynn Hester and husband Zol Harvey. She is survived by her sister Myrna, nieces, nephews and cousins.
